{BBQ Chicken Burgers}

Hi All!

If you follow me on Instagram {which you should! I’m gearing up to host a lovely Mother’s Day Giveaway!} you know that yesterday we hosted a Mother’s Day BBQ and Davin’s whole family came. The crappy snowy/wet weather meant we had to stay indoors, but we still stuck to our BBQ menu. A couple summers ago my girlfriend, Shawna, brought these amazing chicken burgers to a BBQ with all of our friends and I couldn’t get over how good they were, so I made her tell us where she got the recipe.

The few times I’ve made them since then, I always tend to make the same adjustments/omissions, so I’m going to list my version of the recipe but you can always check out the original here.

My favorite thing about these burgers is the change from the typical beef burger we tend to make a lot of in the summer. The chicken is light (not at all greasy like a beef burger) but really filling and the mixture of BBQ sauce and spices means it packs a lot of flavor. It’s the perfect sweet n’ saucy burger!

{I always at least double, if not triple, the original recipe so the measurements below are doubled and will yield 8 good sized, thick, patties}

BBQ Sauce

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 4 tbsp finley chopped onion
  • 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 4 tbsp cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • Hot sauce to taste

  • Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat.  Cook for 8-12 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow to cool.  Refrigerate until ready to use. {Good in the fridge for up to one week}

  • 2 lbs ground chicken
  • 1 cup bread crumbs or crackers
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne
  • 4 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce

  • In a large bowl combine all ingredients and thoroughly mix with your hands
  • Once completely incorporated, form into approximately 8 patties
  • Brush the grill with oil to prevent the burgers from sticking (chicken is especially sticky). Flip once and apply the BBQ sauce you made to the top of each burger, leaving some for later.
  • When cooked through, shut off the heat and place a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top.

Our fav buns are either a toasty ciabatta or thin flatbread bun and fav garnishes are red onion, lettuce, pickles, mayonnaise, and tomato.

Last night one of my in-law sibling couples brought a HUGE build-it-yourself salad and the other, a delish plate of fresh fruit and dipping chocolate and lemme tell you – everything went together perfectly!

I hope we have lots of hot summer nights to BBQ and you try out this recipe!! Enjoy!
